The Spanish Turron, a delicacy from ancestral times

The mix of almonds, honey and dry fruit can only be described as a gods' delicacy! This explosive and delicious combination has been historically used in different parts of the world to make a traditional, soft, crunchy, aromatic and sublime sweet: turron -also known as nougat.

It all started in the ancient Al-Andalus lands, that means, during the muslin occupation in the Iberian Peninsula. Yet, the trade between the Peninsula with Morocco and other countries of Northern Africa made its expansion possible. Currently, both marzipan and this nougat are made in different regions and its cooking process is based on a tradition that dates back many centuries ago.

An Arabian Peninsula sweet

The written history refers to the "Turun" for the first time in the 11th century and it was described as an exquisite sweet made with honey and dry fruit at that time. The recipe of this nougat took a great place in the Arab cuisine and sailed with them to the Mediterranean Sea.

That's how the Alicante Turron is born, a sweet made popular in the 15th century by the one and only Carlos V -who considered that this delicacy should only be made for the Court and Royalty- and today it is not alone, there is a close nougat friend that joins this delight in terms of quality: Turron de Jijona.

Turron de Jijona and Alicante

Five centuries ago, the nougat left its past behind and adopted two names according to their Designation of Origin (DO): Turron Alicante and Turron de Jijona. Any product that aspires to obtain an origin imprint, should follow the cooking method by hard, keeping the very same ingredients and processes of each region.

Both the Turron Alicante and Jijona are the result of a unique mix of natural ingredients that are considered a delight on their own. The traditional recipe of the Turron Alicante and Jijona are made with honey, almonds and sugar; and because of their high content in vitamins, protein and healthy fats, they are considered an energy booster.

Turron equals festivities

There is no way Spaniards can celebrate the holidays in peace without going to buy turron Jijona or, at very least, buy Spanish sugar-free turron online.

This incredible and traditional sweet dates back to the 1500's. It was invented by the Moors in Jijona -tourists can still see the signs that read "buy turron Xixona" in the local stores-, a town located around 30 miles from Alicante. Today, these regions still base their economy in the mass production of the treat during the last months of the year.

This dessert is the result of mixing natural top ingredients like almonds, eggs, sugar and milk to create an edible of increased energetic power, rich in glucids, vegetable fats and protein. There are two main variations of the old traditional recipe. When people buy turron Alicante, they expect the hard texture of the thick candy made with almond nougat. On the other hand, those who prefer to buy turron Xixona are looking forward to savor a smoother texture, similar to peanut butter. At last, they both have the same essence and the important thing is to buy spanish turrón to savor the highest quality ingredients and recipes in the market.

If there is someone in the table that does not eat sugar, do not panic! You can buy Spanish sugar free turron online. There are different websites that offer the most highlighted brands, such as Shopmyseke.
